StoryHealer began with a doorknob, a lick and a question.
A parent-made solution inspired by real therapeutic challenges—and a little boy who started to get in the habit of licking things, like doorknobs.
Our Story
When my son was diagnosed with autism and processing delays, we began noticing some challenging behaviors—like licking the fridge, doorknobs, and even things at the park. His ABA team created a basic PowerPoint-style book titled "What Can I Lick?" It was helpful in theory, but it lacked creativity—no illustrations, no personalization, and nothing that truly held his attention.
So I set out to make something better.
I created a fully illustrated story called "Tastes Like Trouble!" with my son as the main character. The scenes took place in the real world he knows—his New York playground, his classroom—and the book ended with a fun, interactive quiz. And it worked. He stopped licking.
Even more importantly, he loved the story—because it was about him.
Now, whenever he slips up, we revisit the phrase he learned from his book:"Germs taste like trouble!"It's become a meaningful little catchphrase we can both return to—a simple, effective tool born from a story he could see himself in.
